  • Coach Marka

Gremlins

We were proud of all the progress we made last week.  The robot is finally coming together, with lexan parts for the 4-bar intake and the linear slide being installed.  The programmers were also busy getting all the new motors and servos working.  We’ll be continuing to push hard this week to get as much done before our first league meet next Saturday.  Don’t worry if everything is not completely done, however.  We will compete with what we have and continue building and improving through the rest of the season.

  • Sarai and Kirk

Glitch

We are nearly ready to assemble all the parts of the robot and get it ready for programming.  Monday will be an intensive build day so we can meet our goals.   Later in the week please come prepared to learn how to drive and operate the robot before our first MSCRL Meet.   The Glitch coaches are very proud of all our Glitchies.

  • Coach Steve

Surge

We are in the final stretches before our first meet this Saturday. This week we need to make our finishing touches on the build side on Monday so that our programmers have the robot to do a deep dive on tele-op and autonomous. Plan to have some drive practice throughout the week as well as  some CAD for our second stage climber. It's exciting that our First meet as a team is this Saturday but let's be calm, collected and focused going into the week so we are prepared for it. Everyone is doing a good job and I’m proud of all our young engineers.

  • Coach Anson

Crash

Wow! Everything's coming together so quickly, just last week we had a bare chassis and now the 4 bar and linear slides are mounted. I am proud of everyone's dedication and I cannot wait to get the rest of the mechanisms built up. This week we will be prepping for our first meet. With all the hard work that is being put in I can’t wait to see it all come together.

Gremlins

After a quick pause early in the week to wait for parts the Gremlins jumped in to work hard on Wednesday and Saturday.  The intake has been assembled and tested.  We'll need a couple of quick modifications on Monday and then we'll be able to mount the intake and the 4-bar to the robot and hopefully pick up samples from the sub and deliver to the lower net.

We're also moving forward with the linear slides that will allow delivery to the high net and enable the first stage climb.

Glitch

The robot is together and we need to wire it up and start testing so we can identify issues, and potential changes we’ll need with the climb.  This week we will be focusing on Claw and digging into the notebook.

Surge

I’m very proud of what everyone has accomplished so far. This next week we are looking to finish up the claw designs and do some more programming. Expect us to finish putting together the claw mechanism and the stage 1 climber. We are also going to start working on drive practice so everyone is familiar with driving the robot for our first competition.

Crash

I just want to say how proud I am of everyone’s work so far! We got the linear slides and intake mounted onto the robot and it works really cleanly! Next step is the hopper and refinement. The 4 bar is progressing smoothly with help of one of our programmers Chris Lesser teaching our young engineers the mathematics of how to find our gear ratios needed for the mechanism!Next step is working with fabrication mentors to start cutting out the parts and then finishing up the claw mechanism.

Crash

Everyone is doing well with reaching our milestones. The intake is taking shape and looking really promising. The 4 bar, although going together a bit slower is starting to take shape and should be ready to test soon. With the competitions drawing ever closer I hope to speed up our development of mechanisms and get the bot ready for testing. I am really proud of everyone and especially impressed with each sub team's note taking and documentation.

Gremlins

Congratulations girls!!  You have achieved a driving robot and you have the ability to score (limited) points by simply pushing the the scoring elements on the field. The programmers are working hard on teleop controls and learning to use odometery to control robot positioning on the field autonomously.  You've also refined your intake and sample delivery mechanisms.   This week we plan  to work on assembly and programming of these elements.

You worked really hard this past week, and we are proud of your focus and your progress.

Glitch

We are hitting our milestones, our assemblies are coming together with the proxy parts and our programmers are making big progress.   This Saturday we look to assemble robot with the final polycarb parts and really dig into the gripper mechanism.

Surge

Surge is coming together like a veteran team.  This last week we got the robot moving, the linear slides attached and now we are ready to look at the next mechanism.  Come ready to participate, share, program and build.

We are busy with a lot of small group projects - Java Programming, Java-with-Blocks programming, prototyping, assembling, and CAD-ing.  So much progress!  I love watching students create a program that turns a motor for the first time!  We will have a driving chassis by the end of the week.  Sometimes it is hard for a student to settle into a particular project.  If you student is having a hard time, please let us know.

Message From the Coaches:

Now that we aren’t strategizing as a team, but working in small groups, there is definitely a need for mentor assistants.  We only have 1 out of 20 slots signed up for this week.  Please give us a hand!

This week was filled with progress - chassis are coming together, new programmers learned to control a servo. And the whiteboards are filled with great ideas.  Parents, there is a small container of safety glasses just outside the rear door of the assembly room - feel free to grab a pair and come see what fantastic things your child is doing!

  • Coach Marka

Crash

I just want to say how impressed I am with Crash this week! We have progressed a lot farther this week than we have in years past, with our chassis almost completed and both of our mechanisms farther along than expected. I am really excited for this upcoming week as we should start to see these take shape beautifully. I am hoping to get our chassis done by the end of monday to hand off to the programmers.

Glitch

Excellent teamwork Glitch, we have the chassis nearly assembled and ready to be wired while other team members are busy prototyping and the programmers have started preparing.  It will be a fun and busy week, don’t forget your iPads and keep on researching game design ideas on Youtube.

  • Coach Steve

Surge

Good job Surge, really proud with all the awesome prototypes. We have completed the sides of our chassis and are looking to complete the chassis on Monday or Wednesday. As we go into to the week let’s keep building our foundational knowledge. Keep looking at different mechanisms and let’s keep the energy up

  • Coach Anson

Gremlins

The Gremlins are doing great!  We have hit some bumps assembling a new chassis variant and these sometimes lead to needing to take a bit apart and try again - Every Gremlin's least favorite activity :-(

But overall, much progress has been made.,

We've also made a ton of progress in terms of figuring out how the girls want to play the game. They have a plan to progress and improve their robot's abilities over the season and eventually conquer all the game's challenges.   Our first mechanisms, one to reach and one grab and hold onto the sample game pieces, have gone from vague ideas, to sketches, to discussions, to CAD and cardboard prototypes in just a week!!!!  That's incredible work.   Mechanism pieces are being 3D printed over the next couple of days, so hopefully we'll be able to combine them and move forward into testing the prototypes this week.

Programing also began on Saturday.   Those new to programming are being introduced to working with java blocks that will eventually lead to the program used to drive the robot in the tele-op phase of game play.   Our programmers with at least a year of FTC programming under their belts will be exploring Java while working on the autonomous program.

There's so much going on!  We know that it can be hard for middle schoolers to grasp how much is being done right now.  This can lead to thoughts of  “there's nothing for me to do” or “they don't need me” or “ I can't” from the more naturally pessimistic girls.   It's ok…we absolutely do need them, they can and they will. Please know that more tangible successes are on the way.

Please remember iPads this week.  Also the kids are using a lot of energy mentally and physically right now. Eating before meeting (a meal or a snack depending on your family's schedule) can really help gremlins focus better and feel more successful.

We are in serious need of new Coaches and Mentors to help support our teams.  In particular we are looking for Coaches for the Chelsea Glitch and Surge.   Coaches are expected to work with another Coach and be present on most Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Mentors support the team broadly by providing support building the robot, documentation, supervising activities and feeding the students.   If interested, please complete this form:

Greetings Beach Middle School Robotics families, this is your “Week in Robotics Update.”

Message From the Coach:
Greetings new and returning robotics families.  It’s exciting to think that the season is about to kick off in just over a Month!  To help prepare our new students and veterans alike there are upcoming activities planned.  Note, there are no Student Activities this week.  Remember, all summer activities are optional and family time and vacation take priority.

  • Coach Marka

If you are receiving this email and have yet to register your student, do so ASAP.  We have only a few spaces left.  Next week I’ll be updating the email groups and removing non-registered families.
